Mid-Week Music #34 - Non Nobis

This week’s MWM was chosen to commemorate a very special occasion. But there’s a story behind it that you should know, to understand better why this song was chosen.

You see, my family has been looking to buy a new house. We went through a lot of searching, but each one seemed like it wouldn’t work for us for one reason or another. Finally, we found one that we liked, had a good bit of land, and would fit all of us. And then it fell through.

Without going into detail, something changed around the house, making us decide not to get it. That was last year. This year, though, things changed for the better.

We found another house a month or two ago. We thought it might work, but we weren’t sure. Then we visited it, and our minds changed—it would definitely work for us. It was beautiful, had an amazing view, and had room for all of us in the house and on the land. Things kept going right about the house. All of it led to us, finally, today, buying the house.

As we were driving up the driveway, for the first time owning the place, we played this song. And it was perfect. It’s in Latin, but the translation is as follows:
Not unto us, O Lord
Not unto us, O Lord
But to Thy Name
But to Thy Name
Be all the glory giv’n
We were sad when we didn’t get the original house we looked at, but we didn’t realize that God had something better in store. Storytellers have to know just when to bring in some plot twist or character or great thing happening—can’t be too early or too late in the story. And God is the Master Storyteller. He always has perfect timing, even if we can’t see how it all fits together just yet.

So when we pulled up to this wonderful new house, with this song playing, it filled us with gratitude to the Lord. God has provided for us mightily, and increased our borders. It is only through Him that this has come to be. This noble song is chosen in His praise.

Non nobis Domine, Domine
Non nobis Domine
Sed nomine, sed nomine
Tuo da gloriam
