Mid-Week Music #37 - I See Fire

I must admit, I don’t have much of a reason for this one. Well, I have something, but it’s not really that big.

We haven’t even watched this movie recently. But we listened to some Tolkienian music tonight—particularly Misty Mountains, a cover album by Peter Hollens. He’s a good singer, and almost all of his work is completely acapella.

Anyway, the first song on the album happens to be this week’s MWM. And—well, I suppose there’s a small reason I picked this. It’s similar to what happened with “Somewhere”, back before we moved, except without the Providential sense of humour.

Put simply, the song suddenly reminded me of a show I’d been watching or thinking about recently. Actually the same show. So I started thinking more about how it reminded me of that show. And the long and short of it is, I decided to put up this song for Mid-Week Music. I have my own little reasons for doing it.

So, for your listening enjoyment, here is “I See Fire”.

That was the original version, by Ed Sheeran. Also Known As the version heard in the movie (Desolation of Smaug). However, the version I heard—and which made me decide to use it for MWM—was this version. He actually has two versions, Peter Hollens. One with violin accompaniment (by Taylor Davis), and one completely acapella. Here is the violin-accompanied version. Let me know in the comments which of these two versions you like better!

Oh, misty eye of the mountain below
Keep careful watch of my brothers’ souls
And should the sky be filled with fire and smoke
Keep watching over Durin’s sons…

**

If this is to end in fire
Then we should all burn together
Watch the flames burn higher
Into the night
Calling out father, oh
Stand by and we will
Watch the flames burn auburn on the mountainside
Ah-ah

And if we should die tonight
Then we should all die together
Raise a glass of wine
For the last time
Calling out father, oh
Prepare as we will
Watch the flames burn auburn on the mountainside
Desolation comes upon the sky

(chorus)
Now I see fire
Inside the mountain
I see fire
Burning the trees
And I see fi-i-i-ire
Hollowing souls
And I see fi-i-i-ire
Blood in the breeze
And I hope that you remember me

***

And should my people fall
Then surely I’ll do the same
Confined in mountain halls
We got too close to the flame
Calling out father, oh
Stand fast and we will
Watch the flames burn auburn on
The mountainside
Desolation comes upon the sky

(chorus)

And if the night is burning
I will cover my eyes
For if the dark returns then
My brothers will die
And as the sky’s falling down
It crashed into this lonely town
And with that shadow upon the ground
I hear my people screaming out

(chorus)
Now I see fire
Inside the mountain
I see fire
Burning the trees
And I see fi-i-i-ire
Hollowing souls
And I see fi-i-i-ire
Blood in the breeze

(I see fire)
Oh, you know I saw a city burning, and I
(And I see fire)
Feel the heat upon my skin
(And I see fire)
Ooh-ooh-OOH-OOH-ooh-ooh
And I see fire burn auburn on the mountainside
